The global maritime sector has announced an unprecedented inter-industry event, to be held within the framework of COP26, which will bring together leaders in shipping, energy, politics and finance to discuss maritime decarbonization efforts.

Held in Glasgow on 6 November, as part of COP26, “Shaping the Future of Shipping” will bring together industry heavyweights and external experts to address the challenges facing the vital shipping path to decarbonisation.

The top-level, one-day event will feature some of the world’s leading decarbonisation figures, addressing key strategic issues in the rapidly evolving journey towards the decarbonisation of shipping.

The event will take place at the University of Strathclyde Technology and Innovation Center, home to the UK Maritime Safety Research Center, the world’s leading marine technology research hub. Topics for discussion will include: the removal of high carbon fuels from a traditionally “hard to cut” sector; achieving equitable decarbonization frameworks that benefit developing countries; and reducing the financial risk of shipping transformation so that urgent action can be taken to curb emissions today.

The conference will demonstrate the critical importance of immediate action and intersectoral collaboration for the energy transformation of shipping. Major maritime players will lead a panel on “How to meet the challenge,” while major logistics players will bring the perspective of overall supply chain leaders.

During the event, an exclusive ministerial round table will be held in which aspects such as policy and frameworks, innovation infrastructure and financing of energy transformation will be discussed.

Emanuele Grimaldi, President and CEO of Grimaldi Euromed SpA, commented: “A holistic approach is essential for the decarbonization of the shipbuilding industry. Only with international and cross-sector collaboration can we achieve a carbon equitable transition for shipping.”

“We have heard calls from environmentalists and public opinion that we need action more than words. This meeting can catalyze a transformational agenda by reaching beyond the industry itself to engage key stakeholders in the supply chain. global supply “.

Jeremy Nixon, CEO of Ocean Network Express (ONE), commented: “We are meeting at a critical time to seek consensus on a clear technical and regulatory roadmap. And to support our joint global environmental needs and business requirements of the universal industry supply chain. “

Esben Poulsson, President of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), concluded: “This meeting must address the reality of change and the difficult decisions that must be made at COP26. We must reduce the political risk for the shipping sector and the maritime supply chain can increase the speed and scale of the transformation. “

“Given that the COP takes place shortly before the important meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on decarbonization, we consider this meeting to be a great opportunity to get the political leadership necessary to advance the R&D agenda and in the creation of a global market-based mechanism to drive decarbonization. “

Confirmed sponsors include the American Bureau of Shipping, Grimaldi Group, Lloyds Register, NYK Line, Ocean Network Express and Stena. Details of the speakers and attendees for the “Shaping the Future of Shipping” event will be announced in due course.
